Description:
Described by Peter Blake as “One of the finest modern houses built in the U.S. in the post war years,” the Franzen House has been restored to it’s original grandeur and intention. In 1955 Walter Gropius described the house as one of “the best contributions I have seen in a long time on the way to a bold, visual triumph over the gravity of inanimate materials.” And in 1956 the house was chosen as Architectural Record’s ‘House of the Year’. Today, over 50 years later, the beauty and simplicity of this inspired design continues to captivate architectural enthusiasts. In 2002 the house was saved from teardown by its current owner, who is passionate about sharing the rare opportunity of living in a work of art.
The House is constructed predominantly of glass with a dramatic double diamond roof cantilevered above twin decks and sheltering a classically modern floor plan. The glass walls create a wonderful connection to the splendid natural woodland and extend the outdoors in. The covered decks on either side further extend the light-infused interior space and create a shaded transition to the natural surroundings.
